Mervyn L. Jones, Sr. and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones were married in November 1976.
Both were Cleveland natives; Mr. Jones was born on July 7, 1950, and the congresswoman on September 10, 1949. Staunch advocates for social justice, family unity and education, the Joneses were devout public servants who made a positive difference in their community.
Representative Jones’ distinguished career is characterized by a number of historic achievements, including becoming the first African American woman to sit on the Common Pleas Court of the State of Ohio. She made history again when she became the first African American woman to represent Ohio in the United States Congress.
Mr. Jones preceded his wife in passing on October 2, 2003. Rep. Jones passed on August 20, 2008. They are survived by their son, Mervyn L. Jones, II.
Though they are no longer with us, their spirit lives on. We honor their commitment to education through the Foundation’s scholarship programs.
